Selección Especial is the first wine from Abadía Retuerta in which the best wines of the vintage are selected and blended together. All of the wines come from the estate’s own vineyard, which has been separated into 54 distinct plots. This wine mostly consists of Tempranillo, which is native from the Duero Valley, and it is complemented by other varieties from the estate, chosen by tasting. The objective is to balance the quirks of each vintage while maintaining the wine’s characteristic style.

Selección Especial is a faithful reflection of the vintage, the terroir and the personality of Abadía Retuerta.

Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial is a bright yet deep red, denoting a young wine. On the nose it is clean and fragrant, with aromatic complexity - there are fruity aromas of blackberry, red plum and figs, along with floral hints (of wild rose) and spiced notes of clove and bay leaf. At first the taste is broad, vibrant and fresh, but also smooth and mellow thanks to its fine-grained and mature tannins that coat the palate. It has a long finish, and is certain to improve over the years.

Situated in Ribera del Duero is the small, the winery maker has an infatuation with international varieties, and he makes great use of them. Interestingly he sets apart the standard requirements of DO Ribera del Duero, so much so that they are at the forefront of a movement to get Castilla y Leon (currently Vino de la Tierra) recognised as a DO.In 2005 received the award at the International Wine Challenge in London as the world’s best red wine.
